Sony Alpha SAL85F28 A-mount Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens (Black) Reviews
7 of 8 people found the following review helpful A very affordable, light-weight prime lens, February 24, 2011 By This review is from: Sony Alpha SAL85F28 A-mount Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens (Black) (Electronics) The SAL85F28 is one of Sony's first full frame easy choice lens. With the added 35mm focal length over the standard 50mm portrait primes (Sony has two of them, the SAL50F14 and the SAL50F18 (DT)), the SAL85F28 has the advantage of bringing your subject's face closer to you when you want the added shooting distance to i) make the subject feel more comfortable and ii) avoid any distortions that may arise especially around the edges of the frame from shooting too close to the subject.
The SAL85F28 also has an unusually short minimum focusing distance for a 85mm prime, which is 60cm. This outperforms the SAL85F14Z in close-up shooting, which has a minimum focusing distance of around 89cm. You can shoot some impressive close-up with this prime lens even if the lens is not really intended for macro photography.
The lens is incredibly light, although no lighter than its equally new cousin, the SAL35F18 or the SAL50F18 or the SAL50F14. For a full frame prime at 85mm, the... Read more
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful SUPER BARGAIN. GET THIS LENS!, December 2, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Sony Alpha SAL85F28 A-mount Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens (Black) (Electronics) I read all of the reviews, then went out and bought Sony's 35mm and 85mm lenses (SAM). Yes, they're cheap Chinese plastic and they may not make my estate list for my kids. Who cares? The optics are outstanding, the focus is reasonably fast and the images are tack sharp and contrasty. In my lifetime I've had Leicas, Hasselblads, Nikons, full frame Canons, Lumix (4:3), Linhof Technicas . . . .the list goes on. None of them can match the performance of this cheap lens. I'm also pleased with the weight (another benefit of low build quality). The 35mm is my "walking around' lens and I've become quite attached to it. I use the 85mm for aerial photography, with 20x30 enlargements. So for those of you who are hung up on the build quality, think of it this way. Do you really want to spend (seven) times as much on a lens that is built better, but gives virtually the same performance? Why not spend the money on travel and shoot some great shots?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful cannot be happier, November 17, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Sony Alpha SAL85F28 A-mount Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens (Black) (Electronics) I use this 85f2.8 lens with my Nex-5 with Sony's LA-EA1 adapter. As this is a SAM lens, its auto focus using the adapter is painfully slow. Knowing this beforehand, I never planned to use the auto focus function and so was not disappointed. The manual focus ring is very light and can be operated with one finger. Manual focus is quick and accurate.
I am really impressed with the image quality of this lens. It is very sharp, and bokeh quality satisfying. You can easily tell the image quality difference between this lens and Nex-5's E-mount 18-55mm, 16mm, or the A-mount SAM 35f1.8. When I upload pictures to Picasa for sharing with friends and family, most selected pics were taken with this lens.
On cameras that are not full frame, the focal length is equiv. to about 130mm, which may sound a bit too long for portraits. But to me this is perfect for head shots indoor and head and upper body shots outdoor.
