This lens performs great in these conditions. I use this lens on a D3 body and the AF is good. It doesn't seem to be as fast at my zooms (24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8) but it's still pretty accurate when focusing in low light. The image quality is AMAZING. Certainly an upgrade from the older 35 f/2 version . Images has more contrast & are sharper. I also own the 24 1.4 G and I would say that the IQ on the 35 is about the same. Over all, I'm very impressed and satisfied with this 35. [...]

Here are some main points from my ownership experience, which has been largely positive:
-- Chromatic aberrations are very pronounced with this lens (purple and green fringing along high-contrast edges). Nikon has for one reason or another decided not to put ED (extra-low dispersion) glass in the 35/1.4G to correct for CAs, though they saw fit to put this exotic glass in the comparably-priced and superiorly-performing 24/1.4G. The View NX2 software that Nikon provides with its camera bodies is rather good at removing this kind of CA, but two things spring to mind regarding this issue:
a) If i spend $1800USD on a lens of new design, I shouldn't have to correct for CAs this extreme. My Canon 35/1.4L, introduced in 1998 and costing some $600USD less than the Nikon 35/1.4G, did not exhibit such extreme CAs... Read more

I am primarily a macro and close-up photographer, but I have a bunch of the best wide angle lenses, as well (Nikon 14-24mm, Nikon 24mm PC-E, etc.).
Although I do have an older 35mm Nikon lens (35mm f/2.8 AF K-Series), I guess I never used it all that much or managed to properly appreciate it. Not so with this new 35mm/G lens. Of course all of you who have used a 35mm as a mainstay know this already, but what I am finding out to my delight is that the 35mm focal length is all about context, context, context. It is just wide enough to put whatever subjects I have in mind in context. I love it. On FX camera bodies, it is perfect for people photos. Probably not worth the cash for DX bodies.
And although perhaps not as sharp as some of my APO lenses (Voigtlander 125mm f/2.5 APO Lanthar, Leica 100mm APO Elmarit R, Coastal Optics 60mm APO), this lens is... Read more
